Parental concerns over children's financial future
Overview
Research indicates growing financial concerns for parents regarding their children's transition into adulthood. A poll of 2,000 parents revealed that 20 per cent have not set aside any money to support their children once they become adults, while 23 per cent feel unprepared for the associated costs.
Financial pressures are significant, with 51 per cent of parents worried about contributing to university education or living expenses. Analysts suggest that based on Bank of England inflation targets, the total cost of a three-year degree in the UK could exceed £91,000 by 2040, potentially reaching £119,000 for those studying in London.
Parallel findings indicate a communication gap regarding finances. Approximately 70 per cent of parents avoid discussing money with their teenagers, often to prevent causing worry or because they feel the topic is not yet relevant. However, 70 per cent of teenagers expressed a desire to be better prepared for their financial future and requested stronger education regarding investing and long-term planning.
