Parmigiano Reggiano production and protection efforts
Overview
The Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium has initiated measures to manage production levels and protect the Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) status of the cheese. To address a 5% increase in production, the Consortium approved the ‘Progetto Equilibrio’ plan, which aims to prevent market oversaturation through 2027. This plan includes economic contributions for farms exceeding quotas and withholdings for those selling quotas outside the production chain.
In addition to managing supply, the Consortium is actively targeting counterfeit products. During the SIAL food and beverage trade fair in Paris, surveillance identified several non-compliant items from various countries, including the United States, Ukraine, and Egypt, which used evocative names or labels without containing authentic Parmigiano Reggiano. The Consortium estimates that the global trade in counterfeit ‘Parmesan’ outside the European Union exceeds 2 billion euros annually.
