The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles granted parole to Amber Guyger, a former Dallas police officer serving a 10-year sentence for the 2018 murder of Botham Jean. The board cited her satisfactory institutional adjustment and completion of a treatment plan as reasons for the decision, a move that drew opposition from Jean’s family and civil rights advocates. Guyger was subsequently released from the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville after serving seven years. Her legal team noted that she has secured housing and employment and “remains remorseful for the shooting.” Under the terms of her parole, which continues until her sentence expires in 2029, she is subject to strict supervision, including travel limitations supervision. Conditions include regular check-ins, home visits, and travel restrictions, including a prohibition against leaving the state of Texas without prior approval. She is also barred from living in Dallas County or contacting Jean’s family or Dallas police officers. The Jean family’s attorney, Lee Merritt, stated that the family opposed the early release, expressing frustration that the sentence felt “insufficient.”
