Discussions between PAS and UMNO regarding Malay-Muslim unity have progressed, with leaders emphasizing the need for stable political cooperation. UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, attending the 67th PAS Muktamar on behalf of UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, clarified that current efforts are not intended to revive the Muafakat Nasional pact, but rather to meet community aspirations for a more harmonious political landscape. PAS Deputy President Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man noted that any potential cooperation with Barisan Nasional is subject to review by the Majlis Syura Ulama to ensure principles remain uncompromised. PAS Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden reiterated his warning against ‘seasonal’ unity driven by election cycles, attributing the failure of previous pacts to ‘selfish’ groups within the parties. Recent developments indicate a potential rapprochement, with some observers raising the possibility of a new electoral pact termed ‘Muafakat Nasional 2.0’. Cooperation between the two parties in Johor and Negeri Sembilan has reportedly served as a template for working together against Pakatan Harapan. PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang stated the party remains open to negotiations with Barisan Nasional for the 16th General Election (GE16), though final decisions would depend on the number of seats won by each party. However, internal caution persists within UMNO. During the UMNO General Assembly, leaders in Terengganu urged President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to exercise extreme caution, with Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman warning that poorly structured deals could lead to a repeat of the 2023 state election where PAS-led Perikatan Nasional won all 32 seats. In a recent move to strengthen these ties, UMNO President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has mandated UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh to organize the ‘Himpunan Perpaduan Ummah’.
