Paul Seixas, a 20-year-old French cyclist from Decathlon CMA CGM, won the 120th edition of Il Lombardia, setting a new record as the youngest winner in the race’s history. At 20 years and 16 days old, he surpassed the record previously held by Giovanni Gerbi since 1905. Seixas secured his victory with a solo attack on the Civiglio climb approximately 18 to 19 kilometers before the finish in Como, finishing 48 seconds ahead of second-place Enric Mas and 1 minute and 5 seconds ahead of third-place Giulio Ciccone. Remco Evenepoel finished in fourth place. During his performance, he also broke the previous climbing record set by Tadej Pogačar. His performance was so exceptional that the fitness app Strava flagged his data; the platform’s automated system removed eight of his segment times from leaderboards, deeming them “improbable for a normal ride” after he surpassed the previous climbing record on the Civiglio. This win marks Seixas’s first Monument title and his eighth professional victory of the season. Notably, he is the youngest winner of a cycling Monument since World War II, achieving this feat at an age younger than when legends such as Eddy Merckx and Tadej Pogačar won their first Monuments. Following his road victory, Seixas participated in the Roc d’Azur mountain bike event just 15 hours later, treating the event as a recreational outing. His team is currently evaluating his 2027 Grand Tour schedule, considering options such as the Giro d’Italia or the Vuelta a España. Other competitors faced challenges; Isaac Del Toro finished in 28th place, citing physical exhaustion and a persistent knee injury.
