PC gaming shader stuttering mitigation developments

Overview

Efforts to address shader compilation stuttering in PC gaming have progressed through both open-source tools and major industry technology integrations.

Initial developments included Microsoft introducing ‘Advanced Shader Delivery’ for Windows 11, a technology designed to deliver pre-compiled shaders directly with games to reduce compilation time. Concurrently, an open-source tool named SCSKiller was released by developer BlueHeisenberg to scan and compile shaders into the GPU driver cache prior to gameplay.

Following these developments, Epic Games integrated support for Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery into Unreal Engine 5.8. Through a new tool called ASDTool, developers can create Precompiled Shader Databases (PSDBs) tailored to specific graphics cards and driver versions. This integration aims to prevent interruptions caused by Pipeline State Objects (PSOs) being compiled during active play.
