Peatland fires in Malaysia

Overview

Peatland fires have occurred in different regions of Malaysia. In Sarawak, firefighting crews worked to contain a blaze near Kampung Serembang in the Betong district. After three days of operations, authorities extinguished approximately 29 hectares, leaving roughly 6 hectares burning. Challenges included hot weather, limited water, and narrow access routes through plantations.

In Johor, a separate peatland fire near the Punggai-Sebana Cove bypass road in Pengerang saw 80.5 percent of the blaze extinguished. Of the 51.4 total hectares affected, 41.1 hectares were put out. Responders utilized drones, water tankers, and portable pumps to manage the two sectors of the fire. Difficulties in Pengerang included strong winds spreading embers through peat layers, soft soil, and thick smoke reducing visibility for motorists.
