Romania has initiated various technological upgrades to pedestrian crossings to improve road safety and visibility. In the Craiova region, the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) installed over 360 autonomous solar-powered LED systems that function independently of the electrical grid. Similarly, in Brăila County, a project funded by the County Council completed lighting installations at 128 crossings across 34 communes using bilateral LED technology. In Brașov, authorities are testing a different approach using have tested smart pedestrian crossings. This system utilizes crossings using sensors embedded in the asphalt to illuminate the crossing when pedestrians approach, specifically aiming to alert walkers who may be distracted by mobile devices. Expanding on these technological efforts, Bucharest City Hall has launched its first smart pedestrian crossing pilot project on Chitilei Road at the Prahovei Street intersection. This system utilizes a three-layer detection system with intelligent sensors designed to analyze movement and determine if a person intends to cross. This approach aims to address driver desensitization to constantly flashing lights by ensuring signals only activate when necessary. Once intent is detected, the system triggers dynamic visual signaling, including flash lamps and smart LED road lighting. To assist visually impaired pedestrians, the pilot includes integrated acoustic signals and tactile markings.
