Medical specialists in Bariloche, Argentina, successfully performed a complex heart surgery on a 32-day-old premature infant weighing 1,331 grams. The procedure was conducted at the Hospital Zonal y Neonatología (also referred to as Hospital Zonal Ramón Carrillo) to close a patent ductus arteriosus after pharmacological treatments failed. To mitigate the risks associated with transporting the infant to a different facility, a pediatric cardiovascular surgery team traveled to Bariloche to perform the intervention locally. The hospital’s Level 3P Neonatology unit provided the infrastructure required for the intervention, necessary infrastructure, allowing local and external surgical teams to collaborate. The surgery was successful, and the patient remains under specialized care.
