Pediatric leisure study and emotional well-being

Overview

A multicenter scientific study led by Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron has investigated the impact of the PortAventura Dreams Village project on the emotional well-being of pediatric patients and their families. The initiative, run by the PortAventura Foundation, provides free six-day stays at a theme park resort for children and adolescents aged 4 to 17 who suffer from severe chronic illnesses or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Research involving 105 participants from Vall d’Hebron, Sant Joan de Déu, and Niño Jesús University Children’s Hospital found that these leisure experiences lead to a statistically significant reduction in caregiver burden and anxiety levels. Evaluations conducted before, one week after, and four weeks after the stays indicated that the benefits of breaking medical routines can persist for several weeks. Dr. Josep Antoni Ramos-Quiroga, head of Psychiatry at Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron, noted that such positive shared experiences help mitigate the emotional burdens created by the uncertainty and routine of chronic medical treatments.
