The Penn State men’s hockey team is preparing for the 2026–27 season, which begins with the Ice Breaker Tournament. The team is scheduled to play UConn on October 9, followed by a game against Sacred Heart. Head coach Guy Gadowsky indicated the team must replace significant offensive production after the departure of Gavin McKenna, the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. To compensate, Gadowsky plans to use a ‘scoring by committee’ approach that emphasizes depth and tempo. The roster is characterized by its youth, consisting of 18 freshmen and sophomores. The team will be led by captains Dane Dowiak and Reese Laubach, with Dowiak stating the program will focus on transition play and playing fast on the rush. Looking ahead to the 2027 schedule, Penn State is set to face in-state rival Robert Morris at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on February 7, 2027. This matchup, hosted by the Colonials, marks the first time Robert Morris will play at the NHL venue since January 2020. The event is intended to showcase Division I college hockey in a professional setting and provide an opportunity for Penn State to engage with alumni in western Pennsylvania.
