In late July 2026, Pietro Mascagni’s opera ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’ was staged in various Italian locations. Performances included the opening of the ‘Opera in Drink’ series in Civitella Roveto and a production by the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari at the Teatro del Mare in Parco del Nervi. By mid-August, the opera was featured as the main event of the 44th Spoltore Ensemble in Spoltore. This semi-staged production at Largo San Giovanni Giovanni, directed by Marco Iezzi and conducted by Stefano Seghedoni, involved approximately thirty performers, including the Orchestra delle Cento Città and the BJM Choir. The cast featured Maria Tomassi as Santuzza, Giovanni Formisano as Compare Turiddu, Marzio Giossi as Compar Alfio, Iwona Tober as Mamma Lucia, and Minkyung Park as Lola. Later in August, the Mascagni Festival in Livorno introduced inclusive programming for its 2026 edition. In a historic first, ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’ was performed with simultaneous translation into Italian Sign Language (LIS), utilizing the Coro delle Mani Bianche to synchronize manual expressions with the musical score. The festival also presented ‘Mascagnane – Voci che resistono,’ a musical journey narrated by Irene Pivetti and featuring soprano Antonella Biondo, which focused on the female protagonists of Mascagni’s works to explore themes of rebellion and resilience. Additionally, the Mascagni Prize 2026 was awarded to Fiorenza Cossotto.
