Perovskite solar efficiency record achievement

Overview

Engineers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), working with the company UtmoLight, have established a new world efficiency record for large-scale perovskite solar submodules. The team achieved a certified stabilized power conversion efficiency of 23.5% on a 676cm² submodule.

To reach this benchmark, researchers utilized a new fabrication approach where a hole-selective contact forms directly, allowing them to remove the nickel oxide layer typically used to prevent instability-causing chemical reactions. This method helps narrow the efficiency gap between small laboratory cells and larger, industrially relevant modules.

Looking forward, the team aims to produce a full-scale module of 2.8m² with a targeted efficiency of approximately 18% to 19%. Additionally, UNSW is conducting an $18 million project to test the durability of perovskite and perovskite-silicon tandem modules against environmental stressors like humidity and temperature fluctuations.
