Pertamina is pursuing various energy security and expansion initiatives. In Lampung, Indonesia, Pertamina New & Renewable Energy launched a Bioethanol Development Center in Tegineneng to serve as a pilot-scale platform for testing feedstock, technology, and production processes using both first-generation and second-generation technologies. Simultaneously, Pertamina is exploring international upstream petroleum opportunities. The company has expressed interest in Nigeria’s 2026 oil and gas licensing round, seeking producing assets or projects nearing production to bolster energy security as Indonesia’s deepwater exploration increasingly yields gas over oil. Recent discussions between the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and Indonesian officials have focused on these investment opportunities. The cooperation aims to help both nations meet their respective production targets by 2030. This comes as Nigeria seeks to attract international interest through its local content development model, which has seen indigenous companies grow to account for approximately 60 per cent of the country’s daily crude production.
