The 2026 regional and municipal elections in Peru have progressed through intensive logistical preparation, legal scrutiny, and post-election disputes. Following the initial processing of tallies, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) finalized preparations for the October 4 election, establishing a voter registry of over 26.3 million citizens and deploying more than 10,000 polling locations. Election day was marked by various incidents, including an alleged explosive detonation in Celendín, Cajamarca, and the burning of electoral records in the Huánuco region. In Loreto, ONPE relocated polling stations following the death of candidate Sundi Simón Kamarampi and the expulsion of staff from native communities. Additionally, RENIEC flagged irregular ‘voto golondrino’ movement in Arequipa. Post-election, the process has entered a complex phase of counting and legal challenges.
