The Chancay-Shanghai maritime route has begun facilitating the transport of Peruvian fruit to China, significantly optimizing logistics. Initial shipments included 19.6 tons of Peruvian bananas, which arrived at the Port of Yangshan in Shanghai after a 23-day transit. This direct route reduces travel time from the previous 35–40 days and has lowered logistical costs by more than 20 percent. To support these shipments, Cosco Shipping has employed advanced cold chain technology, utilizing smart reefers and controlled atmosphere systems to regulate gas levels and maintain fruit quality. Following the successful transit of bananas, China and Peru established a bilateral regulatory mutual recognition agreement to further streamline imports. This agreement allows both nations to accept each other’s verification results for cold-treatment temperature probes used to eliminate quarantine pests. The first cargo under this framework consisted of 12.2 tonnes of Peruvian blueberries. By utilizing official Peruvian data, Shanghai Customs can reduce inspection times per container by nearly half a day, further lowering costs related to warehousing and logistics. Shanghai Port currently manages more than 70 percent of China’s fruit imports from Peru. While blueberry exports reached US$620.2 million between January and July 2026, the sector faces significant challenges. Despite a 15 percent increase in cultivated area, the 2026–27 season is projected to see a decline in blueberry exports. Proarándanos forecasts approximately 366,000 tons of fresh blueberries, a 4.4 percent decrease from the previous season. This downward trend is attributed to the El Niño phenomenon, which has proven more severe than anticipated. Industry representatives warn of a significant drop in weekly volumes, with a projected 31.2 percent decrease in volume over the next eight weeks compared to the previous year. In addition to blueberries, the adverse effects of El Niño are impacting table grape exports.
