Labor tensions in Peru have centered on demands for higher wages to combat the cost of living. The Federation of Construction Civil Workers of Peru (FTCCP) organized a national mobilization to present the 2027 National Claims Sheet, seeking salary increases and improved conditions. Local unions, such as the STCCA in Arequipa, criticized the government’s planned minimum wage increase from S/ 1,130 to S/ 1,230 as insufficient. In response to ongoing economic pressures, the Peruvian government approved a phased minimum wage increase for private-sector workers via Supreme Decree. The first stage raises the monthly wage to S/ 1,230 effective October 1, with a second increment of S/ 70 planned for the first half of 2027. To assist small and micro-enterprises, the Ministry of Economy and Finance intends to provide a transitory bonus to approximately 144,000 businesses. As of October 1, the minimum wage (RMV) has officially increased to S/ 1,230, marking the first step toward a final target of S/ 1,300. Labor law specialist Germán Lora Álvarez has warned that the impact on employers extends beyond the direct S/ 100 increase, as the RMV serves as a reference for costs including family allowances, training subsidies, and night shift premiums. Experts suggest that micro and small enterprises (mypes) may face disproportionate pressure compared to larger companies, potentially hindering formalization efforts. Despite the government’s plan, labor organizations have remained critical. The Confederation General of Workers of Peru (CGTP) argued that the multi-stage implementation creates uncertainty and suggested a minimum wage of S/ 1,700 is necessary to address inflation. Following the implementation of the increase to S/ 1,230 under Supreme Decree No. 015-2026-TR, the government is now reviewing the second scheduled hike of S/ 70.
