Peru tourism economic trends and visitor profiles development strategies

Data from the 2025 Foreign Tourist Profile released by PromPerú indicates that while international visitor volume to Peru has reached 78% of 2019 levels, the economic impact has surpassed pre-pandemic figures. Foreign exchange generated by tourism increased by 14% compared to 2019. On average, international tourists spent US$1,232 per trip, excluding international airfare, during an average stay of 10 nights. There is a notable shift in booking behavior, with 84% of travelers purchasing services less than four months in advance and 67% booking services individually rather than through pre-packaged itineraries. Primary activities include gastronomy (98%) and cultural experiences (96%), followed by shopping (87%), entertainment (76%), nature (52%), and adventure (46%). Teresa Mera Gómez, executive president of PROMPERÚ, stated that the organization is focusing on attracting travelers who stay longer and visit more destinations to differentiate Peru in international markets. By mid-2026, tourism trends showed a slight decline in Peru’s incoming international arrivals, with 1,956,084 foreign tourists recorded between January and July—a 0.1% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. While Chile remains the largest source of visitors to Peru, arrivals from the United States increased by 2.8%, and South American travelers accounted for 49.2% of all visitors. Conversely, outbound Peruvian tourism to Brazil grew by 18.81% during the same period, driven by interest in ecotourism and adventure. To address sector development, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has entered into collaborative agreements with industry groups such as Apotur and CANATUR Perú. These partnerships aim to improve air and land connectivity through regional airport upgrades and road infrastructure investment. Priorities also include enhancing tourism security, risk management, and preparing destinations for natural phenomena like El Niño, while diversifying offerings into religious, nature, adventure, and MICE tourism.
