Pesticide contamination concerns in Turkish supermarkets

Overview

Greenpeace Türkiye reported significant pesticide contamination in tomato samples purchased from five major supermarket chains in Istanbul. The organization’s ‘What is Inside?’ campaign found that 15% of the samples contained pesticides violating current regulations, including one sample containing Chlorfenapyr, a substance banned since 2010. Additionally, 70% of the samples contained substances from the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) group.

In response to these findings, ŞOK Marketler expanded its pesticide analysis program to include Rio tomatoes. The retailer stated that its testing ensures compliance with the Turkish Food Codex and provides consumers with access to analysis reports via QR codes. A board member of Yıldız Holding noted that recent Greenpeace Türkiye research found no illegal pesticide residues in tomato samples taken specifically from ŞOK Marketler.
