Pet adoption and responsible ownership initiatives continue to be highlighted across Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia. In Chile, reports from the Subsecretaría de Desarrollo Regional y Administrativo indicate that over 3.4 million dogs without known owners are roaming without homes, a figure that may be higher due to the age of the last official measurement. Experts emphasize that successful adoption requires a cultural shift toward responsible ownership to prevent failures caused by incompatibilities in behavior, time, or space. In Ecuador, Mundo Mágico de la Mascota reported that 219 pets have found homes through its national adoption drives in 2026. The organization collaborates with animal protection groups to host monthly events and requires interested parties to undergo interviews and registration to ensure effective placement. In Colombia, specifically in Bogotá, the Instituto Distrital de Protección y Bienestar Animal reported 479 dog adoptions in 2025. Recent efforts during ExpoPet in August 2026 resulted in 105 dogs and cats finding new families. However, challenges persist as Bogotá has over 66,000 dogs living on the streets. Veterinarians note that successful adoption requires patience and consistency to help animals adapt to new environments, sounds, and routines. Further efforts to combat abandonment are emerging in other Colombian regions. In Inírida, the Fundación Compañeros de Planeta currently cares for 219 dogs and 72 cats. Founder Dianey Tavera Montoya reports that the organization faces increasing challenges as more abandoned, injured, or sick animals arrive, noting that monthly food costs can reach 10 million pesos.
