Peter Obi criticism of Nigerian governance

Overview

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued several criticisms regarding the administration of President Bola Tinubu. During Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day, Obi attributed the nation’s economic and security crises to leadership failure, noting that the government has failed to translate national wealth into security or prosperity. He highlighted severe socio-economic challenges, including widespread poverty affecting over 140 million people, high rates of youth unemployment, and significant educational crises.

Obi also expressed concern over escalating food insecurity, terrorism, and banditry. Following these remarks, he criticized the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount policy, describing it as a “reactive and confused approach to governance” that prioritizes political optics over systemic economic reform. Additionally, Obi criticized the 2023 removal of the petrol subsidy and subsequent reforms, such as the floating of the naira, arguing they were implemented in a disorganized manner without adequate assessment of their impact on the population.
