PFAS contamination concerns in Europe
Entities: Wolfgang Köck · Kim Augustin · Cornelia Kienle · Eurofins · Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
Overview
In late July 2026 French media reported multiple PFAS residues in everyday foods such as pasta, rice, bread, seafood, fruit and vegetables, framing the chemicals as a public‑health issue.
Two days later Spanish coverage highlighted PFAS‑based firefighting foams as a major source of occupational exposure for firefighters and introduced new monitoring tools, including portable air‑sampling kits and a fluorescent nanocluster sensor for low‑level PFAS detection in water and air.
Further developments show commercialisation of these tools: industrial laboratory SGS now offers PFAS air‑sampling kits and analytical services (LC‑MS/MS, GC‑MS/MS) that capture both particulate‑bound and semi‑volatile compounds in workplace and ambient air. Researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory reported a cerium‑glycine fluorescent nanocluster sensor that lights up at 0.4 ppb, detecting long‑chain PFAS such as PFOA, PFNA and PFDA, providing a rapid, low‑cost option for water‑treatment facilities.
The focus has broadened to water environments. A November 2025 round‑table in Hamburg addressed persistent water pollutants, including PFAS, while a July 2026 Surfrider Foundation Europe study found PFAS exceeding EU‑mandated PFOS limits at two French beaches in Loire‑Atlantique, with ten distinct PFAS compounds detected and sites classified as “poor chemical status.” These findings underscore growing concerns about PFAS contamination of rivers, coastal waters and the need for coordinated regulatory action across Europe.
