The PGA Tour is advancing plans for a major structural overhaul beginning in 2028, centered on a two-tier system. The top-level Championship Series will feature approximately 23–24 elite events for the 120 highest-ranked players, including the four majors, the Ryder Cup, and the Presidents Cup, with minimum purses of $20 million. The lower Challenger Series will host 144 players in events with at least $4 million in prize money, with promotion and relegation occurring only after season completion. Recent developments include the confirmation of the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral as the fifth Championship Series event. Additionally, the Greensboro-area tournament will be elevated to the Championship Series by 2028. Starting in 2027, Raymond James will replace Wyndham as the title sponsor, rebranding the event as ‘GO by Raymond James’ at Sedgefield Country Club. While commentator Brendan Porath called the minimalist branding a ‘mockery’ of the tournament’s history, Raymond James CEO Paul Shoukry expressed confidence in the tour’s vision. To address the competitive gap for elite players between September and January, the PGA Tour is discussing a potential global series with the DP World Tour. Regarding the postseason, the current FedExCup Playoffs will be replaced by a new format developed by the Future Competition Committee, chaired by Tiger Woods. The season will conclude with a three-week stretch: first, the Championship Series Finale, a 72-hole stroke play event for the top 90 players. The top 32 players will then advance to players, followed by a two-week Tour Championship for the top 32 players at rotating venues. The first week This final stage will feature a round-robin group stage with eight groups of four, while the second week will consist of and a 16-player, four-round single-elimination match play bracket. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp stated the change aims to create a stand-alone competition that commands greater attention from fans.
