LeBron James has officially joined the Philadelphia 76ers, signing a two-year, $8 million contract to end his eight-year tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers. The move, which concludes the period where James and his son Bronny played on the same team, has sparked significant commercial interest; Fanatics reported that James surpassed Shohei Ohtani for the most jersey sales following an athlete’s change of team. James joins a high-talent roster including Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and Paul George. To further bolster the squad, the 76ers signed Dean Wade to a four-year deal worth approximately $39 million. While the roster is viewed as a legitimate championship contender, analysts have raised concerns regarding team depth, the health of aging stars, and the difficulty of managing multiple ball-dominant scorers. Former champion Stephen Jackson expressed skepticism, suggesting that joining a team already prepared for a championship run lacks the challenge required to solidify James’s legacy. Dwyane Wade described the move as a ‘very strategic move’ that provides James with the best immediate opportunity to compete for a championship in the Eastern Conference. During training camp and preseason, head coach Nick Nurse has worked to implement James as a point forward to facilitate play for the team’s stars. On October 8, 2026, James made his preseason debut in a 114-108 loss to the Brooklyn Nets, recording 10 points and five assists. He later shared the court with Jabari Walker, a teammate whose father, Samaki Walker, James had faced in the NBA twenty-two years prior. James has emphasized that building chemistry among the star-studded roster takes time, comparing the process to avoiding ‘instant oatmeal’ in favor of something more substantial.
