Philippine Eagle deaths and conservation efforts

Overview

In early October 2026, two young female Philippine Eagles were found dead in Mindanao due to suspected or confirmed electrocution. One eagle was discovered in Misamis Oriental on October 1, and another was found in Arakan, Cotabato, on October 4.

A necropsy of the Cotabato eagle confirmed electrocution via electrical burn marks, though investigators also discovered the bird had recently been shot with an air gun. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) are investigating these human-related threats.

In response to these deaths, the PEF has called for urgent collaboration between government agencies and electric cooperatives to retrofit dangerous power poles near eagle habitats. Concurrently, new community-based eco-tourism initiatives have been launched in Bukidnon to support habitat preservation and species conservation.
