Philippines El Niño water management response
Overview
The Philippine government has implemented various strategies to address potential water shortages caused by the El Niño phenomenon. Initially, the administration defended President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recommendation for citizens to collect and store rainwater in pails as a conservation measure. To supplement this, the Department of Social Welfare and Development began preparing portable water filtration kits for vulnerable communities to ensure water safety.
In response to the agricultural impact of the Super El Niño, the government has also focused on infrastructure. President Marcos Jr. inaugurated the Pamplona Solar Pump Irrigation Project in Cagayan, which uses solar panels to power submersible pumps for irrigating 602 hectares of farmland. This initiative aims to provide a continuous water supply to farmers while reducing irrigation operating costs and supporting aquaculture.
