Philippines school suspension policy and implementation

Overview

The Philippine government is refining policies regarding school closures to ensure more precise and effective management of instructional time.

In September 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed agencies to develop new rules for weather-related class suspensions. The Department of Education (DepEd) proposed a framework to move away from blanket orders in favor of localized, granular decisions. This approach aims to allow schools in unaffected areas to continue classes while coordinating more closely with local government units and disaster risk reduction offices.

By October 2026, officials addressed misinformation regarding class suspensions. The Presidential Communications Office and DepEd debunked false claims of a nationwide suspension for National Teachers’ Day. While the holiday is a special working day, authorities clarified that suspensions are not automatic nationwide mandates but are instead determined by individual local government units, such as those in Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Pampanga.
