Photography bicentenary commemorations

The year 2026 marks the bicentenary of photography, tracing back to the mid-1820s in Burgundy, France, when Nicéphore Niépce created the first permanently preserved image. International celebrations are planned to commemorate these origins.

To mark this milestone, the French Ministry of Culture announced that ‘Point de vue du Gras’, the world’s oldest surviving photograph, will return to France in 2027. The image, created by Niépce around 1827 using a heliograph, has been held at the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas, for nearly 60 years. It is scheduled to be displayed at the Nicéphore-Niépce Museum in Chalon-sur-Saône from April 26 to June 20, 2027, as part of an exhibition titled ‘L’empreinte d’Hélios. 1826-1827, Niépce invente la photographie !’
