Piddington asylum seeker housing protests

Residents of Piddington, a small village in Oxfordshire, have launched a protest against UK government plans to house approximately 1,250 single adult male asylum seekers at the nearby former Ministry of Defence Bicester Garrison site.

Following an initial symbolic vote where 96% to 98% of residents favored secession from the United Kingdom, the community is preparing for a second symbolic independence referendum scheduled for September 15. Campaigners have utilized an AI-generated music video and anthem, ‘Battle for Britain’, to highlight concerns that the proposed accommodation would house more than three times the village’s current population.

Border Security and Asylum Minister Anna Turley has stated that no final decision has been reached, noting the site is undergoing feasibility assessments and planning permissions. The government has submitted an Urgent Crown Development application, citing the national importance of the project in reducing reliance on hotels for asylum seeker housing.

New tensions have emerged following the surfacing of a planning document and risk assessment suggesting the site could accommodate up to 3,510 service users. Local resident Ian Darby described the potential influx as a “takeover” that could destroy the village. The Home Office has dismissed the higher figure as an “outdated estimate,” maintaining that the site is capped at 1,256 people. The community of approximately 350 residents continues to oppose the proposed ten-year temporary change of use, citing concerns regarding local infrastructure and the facility’s proximity to children’s playing fields.
