In mid‑July 2026 the Veracruz‑based football project Piratas FC faced a trademark setback when Mexico’s Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial denied registration of its name and logo after a complaint from Major League Baseball Properties, representing the Pittsburgh Pirates. The ruling forced a redesign of the club’s identity just days before its scheduled debut in the Liga de Expansión MX on 25 July. Despite the legal hurdle, the club proceeded with its on‑field plans. On 26 July the side travelled to Peru for a Liga 2 Group 1 fixture against ADA de Jaén, seeking its sixth season win, while simultaneously confirming its inaugural Liga de Expansión MX match against Jaiba Brava at Estadio Tamaulipas, with coach Mario García unveiling a starting eleven that includes captain‑goalkeeper Humberto “Gansito” Hernández. Later in the month, Piratas FC presented its official 2026‑27 kits at Estadio Luis “Pirata” Fuente in Veracruz, coinciding with the opening of a Keuka retail store. The home kit is black with gold trim and subtle pirate‑ship graphics; the away kit is white with sea‑chart contour lines, a compass rose and a dark diagonal wave; the third kit features a peach‑tone maritime map design. Goalkeeper kits are offered in blue, yellow and red, all sharing consistent cuff and collar trim and sponsor logos. The club also announced the creation of a third Liga TDP developmental team in Poza Rica, expanding its talent‑development network while navigating the branding dispute. On 1 August 2026 Piratas FC made its first appearance as a home team, hosting Atlético Morelia at the newly reopened Estadio Luis “Pirata” Fuente. The match, broadcast free on XEU 98.1 FM and online, marked the return of professional football to the venue after a six‑year hiatus.
