In late July 2026 Pirelli, together with partners Pyrum Innovations, BASF and Synthos, launched a Europe‑wide “tyre‑to‑tyre” recycling initiative. The programme begins in Germany, collecting end‑of‑life tyres and production scrap from the Driver retail network, motorsport events and the Pirelli Breuberg plant. Pyrum processes the material by high‑temperature pyrolysis, generating recovered carbon black (rCB) and tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO). rCB is fed back into Pirelli’s tyre factories, while TPO is supplied to BASF for conversion into basic chemicals such as butadiene and styrene. BASF’s intermediates are then used by Synthos to produce ISCC‑PLUS‑certified synthetic rubber, which returns to Pirelli for new high‑performance tyres. All steps are traceable under the ISCC‑PLUS standard, aiming guaranteeing that the rCB and synthetic rubber can be followed through the supply chain. The project, coordinated across Italy, Germany and Poland, aims to lower dependence on partially replace virgin fossil‑based feedstocks carbon black with rCB and showcase to supplement natural rubber with synthetic rubber derived from TPO, showcasing a full‑scale scalable circular‑economy model for the tyre sector. The exact proportion of recycled material in future tyres and the commercial rollout timetable remain undisclosed.
