Pitru Paksha 2026 is a 16-day sacred period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to honoring departed ancestors through rituals such as Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan. The period is scheduled to begin on September 26 and conclude on October 10 with Sarvapitri Amavasya. Key dates include Mahabharani Shraddh on September 29 and Magha Shraddh on October 7. Devotees perform Tarpan, which involves offering water mixed with black sesame seeds, barley, rice, Kusha grass, and Ganga water while facing south. It is believed that using Kusha grass is essential to ensure offerings reach the ancestors. Pind Daan involves food offerings made of rice, flour, barley, ghee, milk, and honey to aid the soul’s journey toward moksha. Significant ritual sites include Gaya, where pilgrims visit the Vishnupad Temple and Akshaya Vat; Ujjain at Siddhavat; and Prayagraj at the Sangam. In Kashi (Varanasi), specific Bodh Gaya, the Mahabodhi Temple complex has emerged as a major site where thousands perform rites at locations such as Pishach Mochan Kund Dharmaranya, Matangavapi, and Prayag Ghat are central Saraswati Pindavedi to these rites. Other gathering points include the Saryu River in Ayodhya, help ancestors break the Narmada River in Omkareshwar, cycle of birth and death. Regarding dietary customs, spiritual leader Premanand Maharaj has clarified that on days dedicated to ancestral Shradh, food should first be offered to Brahmins through rituals including washing their feet and performing Aarti. Following the Mandakini River in Chitrakoot. Brahmin Bhoj, family members may consume the remaining food as Prasad. These Satvik meals typically exclude onion and garlic, focusing instead on seasonal vegetables, lentils, rice, and traditional sweets. Astrological traditions suggest these ceremonies mitigate ‘Pitru Dosh’ (ancestral afflictions). Recommended remedies to address this condition include chanting specific mantras, lighting lamps under Peepal trees, feeding cows, crows, and birds, animals, and donating food and water to the needy. For those unable to visit ancestral homes, acts of charity and service to animals are considered valid ways to honor the deceased.
