PKP Intercity is implementing extensive upgrades to Poland’s railway services, focusing on catering, high-speed rolling stock, and technical infrastructure. Regarding passenger amenities, the operator and its catering provider, Wars, plan to introduce new restaurant wagons produced by FPS H. Cegielski. The first units are expected to enter service in the first half of 2027, with a goal of expanding the fleet to 17 specialized gastronomic wagons by the end of that year. The company also intends to phase out shared-class carriages that combine first and second-class compartments by 2027. Currently, 99 such wagons remain in service, but the carrier will not increase their number or continue modernizing them following passenger complaints regarding confusing ~~signage.~~ signage, such as inverted numbers that lead passengers to occupy incorrect classes. The company has also advanced the procurement of Poland’s first high-speed trains. Four consortia—comprising PESA Bydgoszcz and Hitachi Rail STS, Alstom Polska, Siemens Mobility, and Talgo—have been selected as finalists. The project involves the delivery of 20 electric high-speed train sets, with an option for 35 additional units. Final contractor selection is expected in June 2027. To support these advancements, PKP Intercity is executing a massive technical infrastructure investment program for the 2025–2030 period, valued at approximately 27.8 billion PLN (€6.4 billion). This includes constructing major service centres in Poznań, Bydgoszcz, and Białystok, alongside modernizing existing bases in Wrocław and Katowice. Additionally, the operator is modernizing its digital infrastructure by replacing the aging KURS 90 ticket sales system. The new platform is designed to handle higher customer volumes and improve international integration, with initial functionalities expected in late 2026 and full capacity targeted for 2027. However, recent service data shows challenges, with only 68.2% of trains arriving on time between March and June.
