Plastic waste mitigation initiatives and environmental protection in Italy
Italy is implementing continues to implement various scientific and community-based initiatives to address plastic pollution and promote a circular economy. Research efforts include the ProPla project, which utilized biotechnology to convert PET microplastics in water into high-value amino acids. This three-year study, involving the University of Insubria and the CNR, evaluated the feasibility of moving these processes from laboratory settings to industrial applications. Complementary educational programs in Pineto have also focused on teaching students about plastic recovery acids, and material reuse to protect marine ecosystems. Further efforts include the RIPA project, a Ministry of Environment and Energy Security funded initiative using Lago Fusaro as a pilot site to recover and analyze plastic waste in rivers and lakes. Additionally, In the circular economy sector, the COREPLA Consortium has partnered with the Prosecco DOC Imoco Volley Conegliano sports club to promote PET bottle recycling through the installation of eco-compactors, ‘ecocompattatori’, facilitating a bottle-to-bottle recycling model. Additionally, Biorepack’s General Director, Carmine Pagnozzi, has highlighted Italy’s leadership in the compostable bioplastics sector. Broader environmental protection efforts are also underway. While Legambiente has raised concerns regarding the impact of port infrastructure on Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Secche della Meloria Protected Area, Venice is preparing to implement a ‘subaqueous brain’ underwater system by the end of 2026 to manage hydraulic pumps and protect Piazza San Marco from tidal flooding.
