Municipal authorities in Playa del Carmen, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, have implemented several social and emergency initiatives for local residents. To support families during the back-to-school season, the government initially distributed over 1,400 backpacks to children in 19 rural communities, including Nuevo Noh-Bec and Valle de la Primavera. This effort was later expanded through a distribution of 2,000 backpacks at the Luis Donaldo Colosio Sports Unit and Villas del Sol park. Mayor Mercado noted that these distributions aim to alleviate the economic burden on households and ensure students have necessary supplies. Recent updates show the educational support program has expanded significantly, with over 6,000 backpacks distributed to basic level students to encourage student retention. This includes targeted deliveries to the CAM Zazil-Ha special education center as part of an educational inclusion initiative. Beyond education, the municipal government has provided new equipment, tools, and materials to the Municipal Sports Institute. This includes lawnmowers, toolboxes, cleaning supplies, and a rehabilitated motorcycle to ensure the maintenance of local facilities such as the Riviera Maya Sports Unit. Further municipal actions include the ‘Pase Playense’ program, which offers residents a 45 percent discount on Winjet Ferry services to Cozumel through October. To further support the local economy, Mayor Mercado has announced a 50 percent discount on business operating licenses intended to encourage investment and job creation. Additionally, following heavy rains from tropical wave number 37, the local government activated ‘Operativo Tormenta,’ deploying civil protection and public services personnel to manage drainage, infrastructure, and mitigate flooding risks to ensure citizen safety.
