Podemos has begun preparations for the 2027 elections by establishing regulations for primary elections to select autonomous and municipal candidacies. In the Balearic Islands, Ana Rosa Abejón has been selected to lead the list for the Parlament representing Mallorca, following Lucía Muñoz’s decision to decline the regional leadership role. Irene Montero, a former Minister of Equality and current MEP, has officially announced her intention to lead an ‘alternative left’ movement for Spain’s upcoming general elections. During a Podemos event in Madrid titled ‘Peace, Home, Work’ (Paz, casa, trabajo), Montero stated she would submit her candidacy to open primaries accessible to any interested citizen. Montero aims to establish a project that is ‘distinctly left-wing’ to compete for leadership to the left of the PSOE. Following the implementation of these open primaries, Montero emerged as the winner, securing 24,136 votes to lead the party’s candidacy. Negotiations between Podemos and the Frente Amplio coalition to form a single united list for the November 29 general elections have failed due to deep-seated political disagreements and differing views on governance and proximity to the PSOE. Gabriel Rufián of ERC described the failed attempt at unity as an ‘absolute failure’ and a ‘vodevil,’ expressing regret over the confusion caused to voters. While a national alliance collapsed, several regional pacts were established. In the Canary Islands, Podemos, Nueva Canarias, IU, and Sumar will run together under the brand ‘Unidad del Pueblo Canario’. In the Valencian Community, the Compromís-Front Valencià coalition has been formed. In Aragon, CHA and Frente Amplio Aragón have agreed to run together, though reports suggest this pact excludes Podemos. In Catalonia, Podemos has reached a cooperation agreement with ERC to allow for mutual support despite the lack of a broader national coalition. In Barcelona, Ada Colau will lead the Frente Amplio list.
