Podgorica has undertaken several infrastructure and flood prevention initiatives. The Agency for Construction and Development of Podgorica began procurement for the design of three slab culverts over the Mareza Canal to maintain vehicular and pedestrian traffic. To protect the Lješkopolje region, municipal authorities launched a project to clean the Sitnica riverbed. The initial phase involved the municipal company Deponija using heavy machinery, such as spider excavators and bulldozers, to remove sediment, debris, and vegetation from a three-kilometer stretch between Komansko and the Blue Bridge. Mayor Saša Mujović stated the initiative aims to prevent damage to property and lives by improving water flow. Following this, work transitioned to a 2.2-kilometer stretch from Berski Bridge to Plavi Bridge, extending toward the American School. Deputy Mayor Boris Spalević noted that this section presents challenges due to pronounced meanders and a tough substrate, requiring extra effort to ensure the fast flow of flash flood waters during heavy rainfall. Officials indicated that future efforts may include cleaning the Perućica river once administrative paperwork is finalized. Spalević has urged citizens not to dispose of waste in riverbeds or channels and emphasized the need for coordination with the Flood and Water Damage Protection Headquarters. Recent reports confirm that cleaning the Sitnica riverbed remains an ongoing effort in Podgorica, alongside other local urban developments such as the creation of temporary parking in Baston.
