Poland community forest initiative

In late July 2026 Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment, led by Minister Paulina Hennig‑Kloska, inaugurated a pilot "social forest" near Wrocław. The launch covered roughly 13,000 hectares, with about 8,000 designated for public recreation, climate regulation and water retention. The event sparked an online debate, as media personalities mocked the concept and critics questioned its political motives and transparency, while supporters highlighted its benefits for residents' quality of life and environmental safety.

Within a few days the government detailed the broader programme, announcing plans to establish eleven similar community forests around major Polish cities, including Warsaw, Kraków and Gdańsk. The follow‑up description emphasized educational trails, cycling paths, limited logging, and the forests' role in air purification, soil protection and public health, framing the initiative as a historic step toward integrating green spaces into urban planning.
