The Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs and the Centralny Ośrodek Informatyki have launched a testing environment, or sandbox, for the European Digital Identity Wallet. This initiative provides a free resource for sectors such as finance, telecommunications, transport, and healthcare to test how their IT systems and business processes integrate with the new digital identity standard. The wallet is designed to allow users to present digital credentials—including driver’s licenses, diplomas, or professional qualifications—without physical documents. In Poland, the solution is being integrated into the mObywatel ecosystem to facilitate tasks like opening bank accounts online, signing electronic contracts, and filling out official forms. This development aligns with the EU’s eIDAS 2.0 regulation, which expects member states to make their digital wallet versions available by the end of 2026. In addition to digital wallet development, Poland is implementing legislative changes to streamline national ID card procedures. Effective December 1, new regulations from the Ministry of Interior and Administration will allow citizens to collect completed ID cards at any municipal office in the country, regardless of where the application was originally filed. The new rules also introduce a technical procedure to restore the validity of ID cards that were accidentally invalidated by officials within a 30-day window, preventing the need for a full administrative process or a new application.
