Poland international tourism campaign controversy
Overview
The Polish Tourism Organization (POT) launched the international marketing campaign ‘POLAND. More than you expected’, commissioned by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism with a budget of approximately 7 million PLN. Targeting Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, and the United States, the initiative features ambassadors such as Robert Lewandowski, Jesse Eisenberg, Anja Rubik, Maryla Rodowicz, and Lech Wałęsa. The campaign aims to leverage the ‘positive surprise’ tourists often feel when visiting Poland.
Despite its scale, the campaign has faced sustained criticism. Following initial backlash where 85 percent of internet users labeled it an ‘image failure’, the controversy has expanded to include professional experts. While Prime Minister Donald Tusk acknowledged divided opinions, critics argue the content relies too heavily on celebrities rather than the country’s unique identity. Some international observers described the aesthetic as generic, comparing it to a ‘smartphone or dating app advertisement’ and noting that fast-paced editing made Polish cities appear indistinguishable from Vienna or Prague.
As the campaign progressed, POT released a second installment focusing on the Tricity area (Gdańsk, Sopot, and Gdynia), featuring Nikodem Rozbicki portraying Nicolaus Copernicus. This installment drew further scrutiny from specialists. Linguist Professor Jerzy Bralczyk criticized the slogan ‘More than you expected’, suggesting it implies low initial expectations of the country and lacks a confident value proposition. Additionally, advertising professionals have criticized the visual execution, describing the campaign’s color palette as ‘dark and gloomy’.
