The 15th edition of ‘Narodowe Czytanie’ (National Reading) concluded on September 5, 2026, celebrating Adam Mickiewicz’s drama ‘Dziady’. The initiative, which promotes Polish literary classics, saw participation across Poland and in more than 40 countries, involving over 6,000 locations. The event was inaugurated in Warsaw at Adam Mickiewicz Square by President Karol Nawrocki and First Lady Marta Nawrocka. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda also participated by reading a fragment of the work. During the opening, President Nawrocki emphasized that literature acts as a “vessel for national identity,” aiding the Polish community through periods of historical partitions and occupations. He characterized Mickiewicz as a “fundamental figure for understanding the Polish soul,” while the First Lady highlighted the work’s capacity to connect different generations. Regional activities showcased the event’s diversity through various formats. In Lublin, readings occurred at City Hall and on public buses, while in Pakosław, the program was adapted for preschoolers. In Wyszyna, readings were held in a forest setting by candlelight near an old cemetery, and in Sandomierz, the reading took place within a Romanesque church. Other local engagements included performative readings in Wejherowo, jubilee celebrations in Łomża, and public readings in Siedlce, Tarnów, Żabno, and Lututowie. Specialized activities also included a spelling bee in Świdnica. Beyond Poland, In Żabno, the initiative extended to event was held on the borderlands. At market square and organized by the Juliusz Słowacki Center in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine, Municipal-Communal Public Library and the school year began with Communal Cultural Center. Local officials, including Deputy Mayor Zbigniew Mączka and Vice-Starosta Roman Łucarz, joined artists, scouts, and residents for the National Reading of ‘Dziady’ reading. The program featured musical accompaniment by Wojtek Klich and lessons honoring refreshments from the 217th anniversary of poet Juliusz Słowacki’s birth. In Żywiec, students at Otfinów Countryside Housewives' Club. During the Agrotechnical and General Education School engaged with event, it was announced that the text selection for next year’s National Reading will be Joseph Conrad’s ‘Lord Jim’. Beyond Poland, the initiative extended to foster a connection with Polish Romanticism. the borderlands.
