Poland population data methodology update

Overview

Statistics Poland (GUS) has introduced a new methodology to determine actual population sizes by analyzing digital ‘life traces’ rather than relying solely on traditional residency registrations. This approach integrates data from social security, healthcare, tax filings, and school enrollments to identify residents who have lived at an address for at least 12 months.

The implementation of this method reveals that Poland’s actual population is approximately 38.86 million, which is 1.5 million more than traditional registers suggested. The data indicates that foreign nationals account for about 2.3 million people, or roughly 6 percent of the population.

Urban centers show significant discrepancies under the new system. In Wrocław, the population count increased from approximately 672,000 to nearly 800,000 when accounting for students and immigrants, with foreigners constituting about 20 percent of the city's population. While Warsaw has the highest absolute number of foreign residents at 301,000, Wrocław maintains a higher percentage of foreign inhabitants relative to its total population.
