Polish traffic regulations outline specific legal requirements and prohibitions regarding overtaking to ensure road safety. Drivers are restricted from overtaking on roads marked with double continuous lines, as these lines forbid vehicles from crossing or driving over them. To legally pass a cyclist in such areas, a driver must maintain a minimum safety distance of at least one meter without touching the line. Overtaking is also prohibited when visibility is limited by hills or curves, or if a cyclist signals an intention to turn. Further restrictions prohibit overtaking on or immediately before pedestrian crossings, unless traffic is directed by signals. Under Article 26, paragraph 3, point 1 of the Road Traffic Law, overtaking is strictly forbidden in these areas. Drivers are also forbidden from bypassing vehicles that have stopped to yield to ~~pedestrians.~~ pedestrians, a rule that remains in effect even if the overtaking driver’s path appears clear. General safety rules extend prohibitions to dangerous curves and hill crests, even in the absence of specific signage, to prevent head-on collisions. Regarding public transport, there is no general ban on overtaking a bus stopped at a designated stop, provided the maneuver is performed safely and does not create a hazard. However, drivers must yield to buses re-entering traffic within built-up areas if the bus driver signals their intention. If a bus is stationary but not signaling an intent to move, drivers may pass according to road markings and traffic organization.
