The K2PL tank program, involving South Korean company Hyundai Rotem and Poland’s Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), has faced industrial challenges regarding domestic assembly and technology transfer. While the Polish military operates over 200 Korean-made K2 tanks, a subsequent contract for 180 additional units—including 64 K2PL models—has faced negotiations regarding the final assembly of 61 units at Bumar-Łabędy and the location for engine maintenance. PGZ has recommended Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne in Poznań for engine servicing. To bolster the local supply chain, Hyundai Rotem signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Huta Częstochowa to evaluate using Polish-produced armored steel plates. Additionally, Hyundai Rotem selected PONAR Wadowice to produce and service hydropneumatic suspension elements, a partnership approved by the Polish Ministry of National Defence following an industrial readiness audit. To facilitate vertical integration, Hyundai Rotem agreed to acquire the defense business unit of Hyundai Wia to manage critical components like 120mm main guns. As of October 2026, the Polish Armament Agency announced the delivery of a third batch of K2GF Heuk-Pyo (Black Panther) tanks to the 9th Braniewo Armored Cavalry Brigade. However, reports have emerged regarding technical malfunctions in initial batches, with more than half of the first batch reportedly stationary in depots near the Kaliningrad Oblast border. The Polish Armaments Agency has minimized these concerns, with spokesperson Grzegorz Polak stating that such malfunctions are a “normal part of the break-in period” and that the issue is being resolved with South Korean suppliers. Under current agreements, Poland is scheduled to receive 116 K2GF tanks, 64 K2PL tanks, and 81 support vehicles. Recent developments indicate that Hyundai Rotem is accelerating the K2PL production timeline, with domestic manufacturing now scheduled to begin in April 2028—four months earlier than previously planned.
