In late July 2026 Poland’s men’s volleyball team remained a top contender in the Nations League while the Russian Volleyball Federation formally applied to re‑enter the competition for the 2027 season after a suspension that followed Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Russia highlighted its high world rankings and sought reinstatement ahead of the league’s technical review. In early August 2026 Russia announced it would withdraw its men’s team from the 2027 World Championship scheduled in Poland, citing a lack of security guarantees and the risk of the tournament becoming heavily politicised. The withdrawal was communicated to the FIVB, which had already reinstated both Russian men’s and women’s teams for the 2027 Nations League, now expanded to 19 squads. Polish officials warned that Russian participation could create logistical and diplomatic complications, including possible denial of entry for athletes. The Russian federation said talks continue with On 4 August 2026 the FIVB about allowing confirmed that the women’s Russian men’s team to had voluntarily pulled out of the World Championship, reiterating security and politicisation concerns. Despite the withdrawal, Russia retained its third‑place world ranking and will compete in the expanded Nations League as the 19th team, preserving a pathway to the 2028 Olympic Games. Sports Minister Mikhail Diegtiarov welcomed the decision, and discussions continue about the Russian women’s team’s possible participation in the co‑hosted 2027 women’s World Championship in the United States and Canada. The decision follows the International Olympic Committee’s 2023 recommendation to temporarily lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, a step welcomed by Russia’s sports minister as beneficial for volleyball.
