Police operations against organized crime and fraud in Brazi

Overview

Law enforcement actions in Brazil have expanded to include large-scale operations targeting organized crime, corruption, and various regional offenses.

In Santa Catarina, the GAECO group initiated Operation Crackers to investigate a scheme to hide arrest warrants in the national justice system, specifically involving a convict accused of sexual abuse. This investigation, a follow-up to Operation Cavalo de Troia, involved search and seizure warrants in Joinville and Penha to uncover methods used to alter records in the National Database of Penal Measures and Arrests (BNMP). Additionally, Operation Vaga Cativa is investigating the alleged sale of public service positions in the municipalities of Vargeão, Faxinal dos Guedes, and Entre Rios.

In Ceará, the Civil Police launched Operation Impacto to combat the Comando Vermelho criminal organization, which is suspected of attempting to monopolize internet services in Fortaleza. This operation has resulted in 19 arrest warrants and the freezing of over R$ 9.2 million in assets.

In Goiás, Operation Corrente Reversa, involving the Federal Police and CGU, is investigating bidding fraud and contract irregularities within the Aragarças City Hall.

Other recent enforcement actions include the ninth phase of Operation Safe City in Cáceres, Mato Grosso, which led to the arrest of two fugitives, including one convicted of rape of a vulnerable person. In Tocantins, Operation Ébano resulted in the arrest of a suspect involved in multiple cell phone robberies. Earlier incidents also included the arrest of a doctor in Espírito Santo for allegedly possessing an illegal revolver, a man in Mato Grosso for allegedly threatening his wife, and the interception of two men in Valinhos, São Paulo, during an attempted theft of electronics valued at approximately R$ 500,000. Recent developments include the death of a drug leader known as Parazão in Rio de Janeiro following a confrontation with police during Operation Barricada Zero.
