The Polish Sejm’s extraordinary commission for abortion projects is scheduled to reconvene during the parliamentary session from September 15–18. This marks the commission’s first meeting since July 2024. The commission intends to prioritize a proposal from the Polish People’s Party (PSL) and Poland 2050 to restore the ‘abortion compromise.’ This would return legal standards to the framework used between 1993 and 2020, which permitted abortion in cases of threats to a woman’s life or health, severe fetal abnormalities, or criminal activity. Other legislative items under consideration include proposals to allow abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy upon request, as well as a proposal from The Left regarding decriminalization. These efforts follow a 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling that removed the provision for fetal abnormality cases. However, a meeting of the commission scheduled for September 14, 2026, was canceled due to the absence of a position from the Ministry of Health. This cancellation occurred after a hiatus of more than two years. Opposition members criticized the decision, with Katarzyna Kotula describing the move as a ‘highly unprofessional’ and political decision by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, suggesting it was intended to avoid debate on the issue.
