The Polish agricultural sector is undergoing shifts in cultivation patterns, economic diversification, and technological adoption. Sunflower acreage has expanded, and farmers increasingly pursue specialized crops like durum wheat. While many farms utilize assets for supplementary income, such as agritourism or food processing, the sector faces persistent market volatility and rising input costs. Technological adoption through ‘Agriculture 4.0’ initiatives remains a central theme, though some question if digital features are being fully utilized or acquired primarily to access subsidies. Corn production faces multifaceted challenges. Farmers must balance natural drying against the risk of lodging, which can cause losses exceeding 9 percent of potential yields. Recent hydrological droughts have further complicated harvests. Harvesting operations are currently strained by a sharp increase in grain drying costs. A growing crisis in the corn market is driven by gas shortages and rising fuel costs. Propane prices have reportedly surged by over 60 percent, 100 percent year-over-year, rising from approximately 2 1.45 PLN per liter last year to over between 3.20 and 4.00 PLN per liter. liter net. Drying costs have reached between 90 and 105 PLN net per ton, threatening harvest profitability. Consequently, many drying facilities have suspended operations, forcing some collection points to sell accumulated stock at reduced prices to minimize losses, with corn prices in some regions dropping below 600 PLN per ton. The crisis affects approximately 1.4 million hectares of corn cultivation. Potential supply shortages have been linked to Baltic storms delaying shipments at ports in Gdansk and Szczecin. In response, agricultural organizations, including the Lubelska Izba Rolnicza and the Krajowa Rada Izb Rolniczych, have raised alarms. The Krajowa Rada Izb Rolniczych has formally requested intervention from the Minister of Energy, Miłosz Motyka, to ensure consistent fuel supplies. There are also calls for the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) to investigate potential market irregularities and price-setting practices.
