In late August 2026, a Polish-registered coach overturned on a highway near Mezokeresztes, Hungary. The vehicle, which had entered the country from Serbia, was carrying 57 passengers and two drivers. The accident resulted in 12 fatalities and numerous injuries, including nine serious injuries. On September 5, 2026, a second accident involving a bus of Polish pilgrims occurred near Zalalövő. After the bus driver pulled over to avoid a stray sheep on highway 86, a Hungarian truck struck the stationary vehicle. The incident occurred around 1:00 AM while the 53 passengers were returning from Croatia to Poland. Emergency services, including firefighters from Zalaegerszeg and volunteers from Zalalövő, attended the scene. Reports indicate that between six and eight people sustained light injuries, including the truck driver. Because the bus was rendered inoperable, uninjured passengers were taken to a local primary school gymnasium in Zalalövő, where they received food and shelter. During the wait, two Polish priests traveling with the group held a mass for the passengers. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that all pilgrims have since resumed their journey to Poland via replacement transport. Hungarian services are investigating the exact circumstances of the collision.
