Coal mining workers in Poland initiated protests against major companies, specifically Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) and Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG). Protesters from the ‘Sierpień 80’ union targeted JSW regarding wage disparities and the use of external contractors employing Ukrainian workers. At the Wujek mine, owned by PGG, workers engaged in an underground protest and hunger strikes to oppose the liquidation of the Wujek and Bielszowice mines. The miners demanded a “just energy transition” and insisted that liquidation processes be handled by the existing workforce rather than external companies to ensure cost-effectiveness for the state budget. The industrial action at the Wujek mine concluded after an agreement was reached between the workers and PGG. Following these developments, PGG has implemented workforce reduction measures. More than 3,300 employees have utilized protections designed to assist the company during this period. Approximately 3,600 individuals may benefit from state-funded protections, which include a one-time severance payment of 170,000 PLN. The employer is also providing assistance to help displaced workers find new employment.
